11+ English typically covers comprehension (answering detailed questions on an unseen passage), creative or continuous writing, and a technical strand covering grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary — often tested through cloze passages, sentence correction, or synonym/antonym questions. Comprehension passages are usually chosen to be slightly demanding for the age group, rewarding students who read widely and can infer meaning, not just locate facts.

Creative writing is marked on structure, vocabulary range and the ability to sustain a piece of writing to a clear ending within a tight time limit — a very different skill from classroom writing where time pressure is lower.
