Year 6 · National Curriculum (England)
Year 6 is SATs year: students analyse how writers use language for effect, read a wide range of text types including persuasive and formal writing, and are expected to write confidently across genres — from a formal letter to a piece of narrative fiction. Grammar extends to the passive voice and correct use of semi-colons, colons and dashes.
The reading SATs test comprehension and inference under timed conditions across an unseen text booklet, while the writing assessment is based on a portfolio of work produced across the year — both benefit from focused, exam-aware preparation alongside genuine reading enjoyment.
