English

Year 5 · National Curriculum (England)

Year 5 develops inference and prediction skills further — making reasoned predictions about what might happen next in a text, based on evidence already given. Cohesive devices (words and phrases that link ideas between paragraphs) are taught explicitly, alongside relative clauses ("the man who lived next door") and modal verbs for expressing possibility ("might", "could", "must").

Writing extends to matching register and formality to purpose and audience, and students are expected to edit and improve their own writing, not just produce a first draft.
