Mathematics

11+ (Eleven Plus)

11+ Maths tests draw on the full Key Stage 2 curriculum (Years 3–6) but under exam conditions: multi-step word problems, mental arithmetic under time pressure, and reasoning questions designed to separate strong mathematical thinking from simple recall. Most papers (GL Assessment or CEM/Durham-style, depending on the region and school) cover the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, and basic geometry — but phrased as puzzles rather than straightforward calculations.

The real skill being tested is speed combined with accuracy under pressure, and the ability to spot which operation a worded question actually requires. Students who are comfortable with KS2 content but haven't practised exam-style timing and question phrasing often underperform relative to their actual ability — which is exactly the gap focused 11+ preparation is meant to close.
