Computer Science — PYP

International Baccalaureate · Ages 3-12

Computing in the PYP sits within the technology strand and the approaches to learning skills, so it is integrated into inquiry rather than timetabled as a separate subject in most schools.

Children learn to investigate, create and communicate using digital tools, and develop computational thinking through sequencing, pattern recognition and simple block-based coding with tools such as ScratchJr and Scratch.

Digital citizenship is treated as a real strand — being a principled and caring user of technology maps directly onto the IB learner profile, so online behaviour is discussed rather than merely restricted.

Key topics covered

  • Computational Thinking — Sequencing, pattern recognition and breaking problems into steps.
  • Block-Based Coding — Creating programs with sequence, repetition and simple events.
  • Creating with Technology — Producing digital media, documents and presentations to communicate ideas.
  • Investigating & Researching — Searching effectively and judging whether a source is reliable.
  • Digital Citizenship — Safe, principled and respectful use of technology and online spaces.
  • Organising Information — Saving, structuring and retrieving digital work independently.
