Mathematics — PYP

International Baccalaureate · Ages 3-12

In the IB Primary Years Programme mathematics is taught through transdisciplinary units of inquiry rather than as an isolated subject, so children meet number, measurement and shape while investigating a wider theme.

The strands are number, pattern and function, measurement, shape and space, and data handling. Children move through a constructing meaning, transferring meaning and applying with understanding cycle — building a concept concretely before they use symbols for it.

Because the PYP is a framework rather than a fixed syllabus, schools vary in the exact content covered at each age. Tutoring works best here when it targets the underlying concept rather than a textbook chapter.

Key topics covered

  • Number — Counting, place value, the four operations, fractions and decimals.
  • Pattern & Function — Recognising, describing and extending patterns and relationships.
  • Measurement — Length, mass, capacity, time, temperature, perimeter, area and volume.
  • Shape & Space — 2D and 3D shapes, position, direction, symmetry and transformation.
  • Data Handling — Collecting, organising and representing data, and simple probability.
  • Inquiry & Application — Applying mathematical thinking within transdisciplinary units of inquiry.
