Computer Science — MYP 2

International Baccalaureate · Ages 12-13

MYP 2 Design extends programming into text-based code and more ambitious digital products. Students work with variables, conditionals, loops and lists, most often in Python, and plan before they build.

The design cycle work becomes more rigorous — clients and users are identified, research is documented, and solutions are tested against measurable criteria.

Students also study how networks and data work, and begin to consider the ethical implications of the technology they build, which is assessed within the evaluation criterion.

Key topics covered

  • Text-Based Programming — Variables, conditionals, loops and lists in Python or similar.
  • The Design Cycle — Documented research, design specification, creation and evaluation.
  • Data & Information — Structuring, storing and presenting data to answer a question.
  • Networks & Systems — How devices connect and how data moves and is stored.
  • Testing & Iteration — Measurable success criteria, user testing and improvement.
  • Ethics of Technology — Privacy, accessibility and the wider impact of digital products.
