Computer Science — MYP 3

International Baccalaureate · Ages 13-14

MYP 3 Design brings programming to a level comparable with the start of a GCSE or IGCSE computing course. Students work with functions, lists, file handling and structured program design in Python.

Projects are substantial and fully documented through the design cycle, with real users, researched solutions and measurable testing.

Students also cover computer architecture, data representation in binary, networks and cyber security, which prepares those continuing to Diploma Computer Science.

Key topics covered

  • Structured Programming — Functions, parameters, lists, file handling and modular design.
  • Algorithms — Flowcharts, pseudocode, searching, sorting and hand-tracing.
  • Data Representation — Binary, hexadecimal, character encoding and image and sound storage.
  • Computer Architecture — Processor, memory, storage and the fetch-execute cycle.
  • Networks & Security — Topologies, protocols, encryption and cyber threats.
  • Design Project — A documented project through the full design cycle with user testing.
