English — PYP

International Baccalaureate · Ages 3-12

PYP language learning is organised around oral, visual and written communication, and is embedded in units of inquiry rather than taught from a reading scheme alone.

Children develop listening and speaking, viewing and presenting, reading and writing together. The programme places unusual emphasis on viewing and presenting — interpreting and creating visual media — which is distinctive compared with most national curricula.

Learners are expected to reflect on their own progress and set goals, so tutoring that builds independence and articulacy fits the programme better than drilling alone.

Key topics covered

  • Oral Communication — Listening, speaking, discussion and presenting ideas to others.
  • Reading — Phonics, fluency, comprehension strategies and reading for enjoyment.
  • Writing — Writing for a range of purposes with attention to structure and audience.
  • Viewing & Presenting — Interpreting and creating visual and multimodal texts.
  • Language Conventions — Grammar, spelling and punctuation taught in the context of real writing.
  • Inquiry & Reflection — Using language across units of inquiry and reflecting on progress.
