English — Grade 2

American Curriculum · Ages 7-8

Second grade shifts from learning to read toward reading to learn. Students decode multisyllabic words and common irregular spellings, read grade-level text fluently, and use context to work out unfamiliar vocabulary.

Comprehension moves into central message, lesson or moral, comparing two versions of the same story, and using text features such as headings and captions to locate information. Writing produces structured paragraphs with a clear topic sentence and supporting details, and students learn to revise with help rather than submitting a first draft.

Key topics covered

  • Phonics & Decoding — Multisyllabic words, vowel teams and common irregular spellings.
  • Reading Literature — Central message and moral, story structure, and points of view of characters.
  • Reading Informational Text — Main idea, supporting details, and using headings, captions and glossaries.
  • Vocabulary — Prefixes, suffixes, compound words, and using context clues.
  • Writing — Opinion, informative and narrative paragraphs with topic sentences and detail.
  • Language & Conventions — Collective and irregular plural nouns, past tense verbs, commas and apostrophes.
