Science — Grade 2

American Curriculum · Ages 7-8

Second grade science focuses on the properties of matter and the shape of the land. Students classify materials by observable properties, test which material is best suited to a purpose, and observe that some changes can be reversed and some cannot.

Earth science covers how wind and water change the shape of land, mapping where land and water are found, and comparing different landforms. Life science studies what plants need to grow, how seeds are dispersed and pollinated, and why different habitats support different living things.

Key topics covered

  • Properties of Matter — Classifying materials by observable properties and choosing one for a purpose.
  • Changes in Matter — Reversible and irreversible changes, including heating and cooling.
  • Earth's Surface — How wind and water reshape land, and mapping landforms and bodies of water.
  • Plants & Their Needs — What plants need to grow, and how seeds are dispersed and pollinated.
  • Habitats & Biodiversity — Why different habitats support different kinds of living things.
  • Engineering Design — Comparing two possible solutions to the same problem.
