English — Grade 12

American Curriculum · Ages 17-18

Twelfth grade English works at close to introductory college level, often focused on British or world literature, or on an AP English Language or Literature syllabus. Students analyze how an author's choices about structure and ambiguity shape meaning, and evaluate multiple interpretations of a work.

Writing produces sustained analytical and argumentative essays with an independent thesis, and most students also draft and revise college application essays. Research requires synthesizing complex sources and sustaining an argument across an extended piece.

Key topics covered

  • Advanced Literary Analysis — Structure, ambiguity, and evaluating multiple interpretations of a work.
  • British & World Literature — Major works and movements studied in historical and cultural context.
  • Argument & Thesis — Developing and sustaining an independent thesis across a long essay.
  • Rhetoric — Analyzing and constructing persuasive arguments for a real audience.
  • Research Writing — Synthesizing complex sources into an extended, well-cited piece.
  • College Application Essays — Drafting, focusing and revising personal statements and supplements.
  • Language & Style — Precision, tone, register and deliberate stylistic control.
