International Baccalaureate · Ages 15-16

MYP 5 Language and Literature is the final MYP year and, where offered, is assessed by the external on-screen eAssessment alongside internal criteria.

Students produce sustained critical essays, comparative analyses and creative work of real sophistication, analysing literary and non-literary texts in cultural context and evaluating multiple interpretations.

The course is deliberate preparation for Diploma Language and Literature, and students who master close analysis with precise quotation here find the Diploma's paper 1 unseen commentary considerably more approachable.

Key topics covered

  • Critical Essay — Sustained, evaluative argument supported by close textual evidence.
  • Comparative Analysis — Comparing texts across form, period, culture or medium.
  • Unseen Commentary — Analysing an unfamiliar literary or non-literary text under time.
  • Text & Context — Production, reception, and how context shapes meaning.
  • Creative Production — Original writing demonstrating deliberate craft and control.
  • eAssessment Preparation — On-screen examination technique and the assessment criteria.
