English — MYP 3

International Baccalaureate · Ages 13-14

MYP 3 Language and Literature requires sustained analytical essays and independent interpretation. Students study whole novels, drama and poetry, and analyse how writers use structure and language deliberately.

Comparative work becomes routine, and students engage with how context and audience shape meaning. Creative writing is assessed on craft rather than content alone.

This year sits at the point where students following the Diploma route begin to need essay discipline — a clear thesis, evidence and analysis — and it is far easier to build now than in MYP 5.

Key topics covered

  • Literary Analysis — Whole texts analysed for theme, structure, character and technique.
  • Comparative Response — Sustained comparison of texts or media on a shared question.
  • Context & Audience — How context and intended audience shape meaning and reception.
  • Analytical Essay — Thesis, evidence and analysis organised into a coherent argument.
  • Creative Craft — Deliberate control of voice, form and style in original writing.
  • Using Language — Register, precision, vocabulary range and grammatical accuracy.
