English — MYP 2

International Baccalaureate · Ages 12-13

MYP 2 Language and Literature deepens analysis of how writers achieve effects and introduces comparison across texts and media.

Students study longer prose works, poetry and drama, and analyse how context shapes a text. Creative writing becomes more controlled, and analytical writing requires a clear line of argument supported by quotation.

The organising criterion becomes more demanding at this level: responses must be structured, cohesive and referenced properly, which is a genuine step up from MYP 1.

Key topics covered

  • Analysing Texts — Language, structure, style and the effect of context on meaning.
  • Comparing Texts — Comparing how two texts or media treat a theme or subject.
  • Organising Writing — Structured, cohesive responses with accurate referencing.
  • Producing Text — Creative and analytical writing with a controlled voice.
  • Using Language — Precision, register, vocabulary range and grammatical accuracy.
  • Global Contexts — Reading texts through wider cultural and human questions.
