Mathematics — MYP 2
International Baccalaureate · Ages 12-13
MYP 2 extends algebra and proportional reasoning. Students work with directed numbers, indices, ratio and proportion, and algebraic manipulation including expanding and factorising simple expressions.
Geometry covers angle rules, transformations, area and volume of composite shapes, and the beginnings of Pythagoras. Statistics extends into interpreting and comparing data sets and calculating measures of spread.
Assessment continues against the four MYP criteria, with investigations requiring students to generalise a pattern and justify their rule with increasing rigour.
Key topics covered
- NumberDirected numbers, indices, standard form, ratio and proportion.
- AlgebraExpanding, factorising, and solving linear equations and inequalities.
- GeometryAngle rules, transformations, Pythagoras, area and volume.
- Statistics & ProbabilityComparing data sets, measures of spread and combined probability.
- Investigating PatternsGeneralising a rule from a pattern and justifying it.
- Real-Life ApplicationsModelling authentic problems and evaluating the solution.
