In CBSE Classes 1 to 5 science is taught as Environmental Studies (EVS) rather than as a separate subject, integrating science with social awareness. Class 1 EVS covers the child's immediate world — family, home, school, body parts, food, plants, animals and the weather.

The approach is observational and discussion-led: children notice, describe and ask questions rather than memorise definitions. It also introduces good habits around cleanliness, safety and caring for plants and animals.
