Science — Grade 1

American Curriculum · Ages 6-7

First grade science is hands-on and observation-driven. Students investigate light and sound — what makes sound, how vibration travels, what happens when light hits different materials — and explore how plants and animals use their external parts to survive, grow and meet their needs.

They also observe patterns in the sky, including day length across seasons, and study how young animals resemble their parents. Throughout, students practice asking questions, making predictions, and describing what they actually observed rather than what they expected.

Key topics covered

  • Light & Sound — How sound is made by vibration and how light behaves with different materials.
  • Plant & Animal Structures — External parts that help living things survive, grow and meet their needs.
  • Parents & Offspring — How young plants and animals resemble, but are not identical to, their parents.
  • Patterns in the Sky — Day and night, seasonal patterns and the changing amount of daylight.
  • Science Practices — Asking questions, predicting, observing carefully and describing results.
  • Engineering Design — Designing a simple solution to a problem and testing whether it works.
