Year 10 begins the two-year GCSE course, which for almost all students means TWO separate qualifications studied together: GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. Language covers unseen fiction and non-fiction comprehension plus creative and transactional writing; Literature covers set texts — typically a Shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, a modern prose or drama text, and a poetry anthology.

Most of the actual content teaching happens in Year 10, with essay technique and exam-style practice building throughout. Because Language and Literature are graded and examined separately, it's worth confirming with your child's school exactly which set texts they're studying before booking tutoring.
