Year 1 · National Curriculum (England)
Year 1 English centres on phonics: blending sounds to read words, and segmenting words to spell them, following the school's chosen phonics programme. Reading focuses on decoding simple texts accurately and beginning to read with expression, while writing introduces capital letters, full stops and simple, complete sentences.
Spoken language work — retelling stories, listening to others, and answering questions in full sentences — runs throughout, building the vocabulary and confidence that written work depends on.
