GCSE English almost always means two separate qualifications studied together: English Language and English Literature. Language is assessed through unseen fiction and non-fiction extracts (reading comprehension) and creative and transactional writing tasks; Literature is assessed through essays on a fixed set of studied texts — typically a Shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, a modern prose or drama text, and a cluster of poems from an anthology.

While the overall structure is consistent across exam boards, the specific set texts, paper format and exact assessment objectives differ by board. Literature exams are usually closed-book, so students need strong recall of quotations and textual detail, not just understanding — this is where focused, text-specific tutoring makes the most measurable difference in the months before the exam.
