Mathematics — MYP 3

International Baccalaureate · Ages 13-14

MYP 3 is a pivotal year: students consolidate the algebra that the MYP 4 and 5 courses assume, and in many schools the extended and standard mathematics pathways begin to separate here.

Content covers indices and standard form, algebraic manipulation including expanding double brackets and factorising, linear equations and simultaneous equations, straight-line graphs and gradient, Pythagoras and an introduction to trigonometry, and statistics with measures of spread.

MYP 3 sits at roughly the same point as Year 9 in the British system and Grade 8 in the American, so it is a natural moment to check a student is on track for their intended Diploma pathway.

Key topics covered

  • Number & Indices — Standard form, laws of indices, surds and rational numbers.
  • Algebra — Expanding double brackets, factorising and rearranging formulae.
  • Equations & Graphs — Linear and simultaneous equations, gradient and straight-line graphs.
  • Geometry & Trigonometry — Pythagoras, right-angled trigonometry, similarity and transformations.
  • Statistics & Probability — Measures of spread, scatter graphs, correlation and probability.
  • Investigating Patterns — Generalising, justifying and proving a rule algebraically.
