English — MYP 1

International Baccalaureate · Ages 11-12

MYP Language and Literature in Year 1 introduces analytical reading of texts drawn from a range of genres, cultures and periods, taught around global contexts rather than a fixed reading list.

Students study prose, poetry, drama and media, and learn to comment on how writers use language and structure. Assessment uses four criteria — analysing, organising, producing text, and using language — with creative and analytical writing both formally assessed.

Because the MYP has no set texts, schools differ widely in what students read. Support at this level works best when it targets the assessment criteria, which are constant, rather than particular books.

Key topics covered

  • Analysing Texts — How language, structure and style create meaning and effect.
  • Reading Across Genres — Prose, poetry, drama and media from a range of cultures.
  • Organising Writing — Structuring a response with clear focus, sequence and cohesion.
  • Producing Text — Creative and analytical writing for a defined purpose and audience.
  • Using Language — Accurate grammar, varied vocabulary and appropriate register.
  • Global Contexts — Connecting texts to wider human and cultural questions.
