International Baccalaureate · Ages 16-19

IB Diploma Biology at Standard or Higher Level is a prerequisite for medicine and life sciences, and the current syllabus is organised around unifying themes and concepts rather than a list of topics.

Content covers unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change, examined at the molecular, cellular, organism and ecosystem levels. Higher Level adds substantial additional depth throughout.

The internal assessment is a genuinely independent scientific investigation worth 20% of the grade, and the collaborative sciences project is compulsory. Both reward planning early rather than late.

• Interaction & Interdependence — Neural and hormonal control, homeostasis, ecosystems and populations.
• Continuity & Change — Evolution, natural selection, classification and biodiversity.
• Internal Assessment — The independent scientific investigation worth 20% of the grade.
