CBSE Class 10 English (Language and Literature) is a board examination subject assessed by a single written paper covering reading, grammar, writing and literature.

Literature is drawn from the NCERT First Flight reader and the Footprints Without Feet supplementary text, and questions include short-answer, extended-answer and extract-based responses. Reading covers discursive and case-based unseen passages.

Writing is examined in strict prescribed formats — formal letter and analytical paragraph — where deviation costs marks regardless of content quality. Format discipline is one of the most efficient things to drill before the board exam.

Key topics covered

  • First Flight — Prose & Poetry — Set NCERT texts with extract-based and extended-answer questions.
  • Footprints Without Feet — The supplementary reader and its assessed questions.
  • Reading Comprehension — Discursive and case-based unseen passages under time pressure.
  • Grammar — Tenses, modals, subject-verb concord, reported speech and determiners.
  • Formal Letter Writing — The prescribed format, register and content expectations.
  • Analytical Paragraph — Interpreting a chart or cue and writing a structured analytical response.
  • Board Exam Technique — Mark allocation, answer length and time management across sections.
