Computer Science — Year 2

British Curriculum · Ages 6-7

Year 2 builds directly on algorithmic thinking by creating and debugging simple programs — usually through block-based tools appropriate for the age group — and understanding that programs follow instructions in a specific order. Children continue developing online safety habits and begin using technology purposefully to organise and present digital content.

As with Year 1, exact sequencing is a school decision within the Key Stage 1 programme of study, not a fixed year-by-year national standard.

Key topics covered

  • Creating & Debugging Programs — Simple block-based programs, understanding instruction order.
  • Algorithmic Thinking — Predicting what a simple program will do.
  • Online Safety — Continued development of safe, respectful technology use.
  • Organising Digital Content — Using technology purposefully to create and present work.
