Year 4 pushes fluency further: students are expected to know all times tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of the year, tested nationally through the Multiplication Tables Check. Number work extends to 4-digit numbers, negative numbers in context, and Roman numerals to 100.

Fractions grow more demanding — finding equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, and a first proper introduction to decimals, including tenths and hundredths. Measurement adds area, perimeter of rectilinear shapes, and converting between units. Geometry introduces coordinates, translation, and a wider range of angle and shape properties.

This is often the year gaps become visible, particularly around times tables fluency — early, consistent 1-to-1 support helps close them before Year 5's heavier fraction and decimal work.
