Mathematics — MYP 5

International Baccalaureate · Ages 15-16

MYP 5 completes the Middle Years Programme and, in schools offering it, culminates in the MYP eAssessment — an externally marked on-screen examination that provides an internationally recognised certificate.

Content covers quadratics and their graphs, algebraic fractions, functions and transformations, exponential models, trigonometry including non-right-angled triangles, circle geometry, vectors, and statistics with standard deviation.

This is the decision year for the Diploma: students choose between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, at Standard or Higher Level, and MYP 5 performance is the main evidence used to guide that choice.

Key topics covered

  • Quadratics & Functions — Quadratic equations and graphs, function notation and transformations.
  • Algebraic Manipulation — Algebraic fractions, indices, surds and rearranging complex formulae.
  • Exponential & Other Models — Growth and decay, exponential graphs and modelling real situations.
  • Trigonometry — Sine and cosine rules, area of a triangle, and 3D trigonometry.
  • Geometry & Vectors — Circle theorems, similarity, congruence and vector geometry.
  • Statistics & Probability — Standard deviation, cumulative frequency and conditional probability.
  • eAssessment Preparation — On-screen examination technique and the four assessment criteria.
