Physics — Class 11

CBSE (Indian Curriculum) · Ages 16-17

CBSE Class 11 Physics is the mechanics-heavy half of the senior secondary course and the foundation for both the Class 12 board exam and JEE or NEET preparation.

Content covers physical world and measurement, kinematics, laws of motion, work energy and power, motion of systems of particles and rigid bodies, gravitation, properties of bulk matter, thermodynamics, behaviour of perfect gases and kinetic theory, and oscillations and waves.

The mathematical demand is high and assumes Class 11 Mathematics is being taken alongside. Rotational motion and thermodynamics are consistently the topics students find hardest.

Key topics covered

  • Measurement & Kinematics — Units, dimensions, errors, motion in a straight line and in a plane.
  • Laws of Motion — Newton's laws, friction, circular motion and free-body analysis.
  • Work, Energy & Power — Work-energy theorem, conservation of energy, and collisions.
  • Rotational Motion — Centre of mass, torque, moment of inertia and angular momentum.
  • Gravitation — Universal law, gravitational potential, escape velocity and satellites.
  • Properties of Matter — Elasticity, fluid mechanics, surface tension and thermal properties.
  • Thermodynamics & Kinetic Theory — Laws of thermodynamics, heat engines and the kinetic theory of gases.
  • Oscillations & Waves — Simple harmonic motion, wave motion, superposition and resonance.
