English — Class 11

CBSE (Indian Curriculum) · Ages 16-17

CBSE Class 11 English Core builds the reading, writing and literary skills examined in the Class 12 board paper. The NCERT texts are Hornbill and Snapshots.

The course covers unseen comprehension and note-making, writing in the prescribed formats — notice, advertisement, formal letter, article, speech and debate — and literature questions on prose, poetry and the supplementary reader.

Note-making and summary are distinctive to the CBSE paper and are marked to a specific convention. Learning that convention in Class 11 removes a reliable source of lost marks in Class 12.

Key topics covered

  • Hornbill — Prose & Poetry — Set NCERT texts studied for theme, technique and context.
  • Snapshots — Supplementary — The supplementary reader and its extended-answer questions.
  • Reading Comprehension — Unseen factual and discursive passages under exam conditions.
  • Note-Making & Summary — The prescribed abbreviation and heading convention, and summarising.
  • Writing Formats — Notice, advertisement, formal letter, article, speech and debate.
  • Grammar in Context — Editing, gap filling, transformation and error correction.
