Chemistry — Class 11

CBSE (Indian Curriculum) · Ages 16-17

CBSE Class 11 Chemistry covers the physical, inorganic and organic foundations that Class 12 and competitive entrance exams build on directly.

Physical chemistry covers basic concepts and the mole, structure of atom, states of matter, thermodynamics, equilibrium and redox reactions. Inorganic covers periodic classification, chemical bonding, hydrogen, the s-block and p-block elements. Organic covers basic principles and techniques, hydrocarbons, and environmental chemistry.

Mole calculations and chemical equilibrium are the highest-yield topics and the most common source of lost marks. Organic nomenclature and mechanism notation, learned properly now, pay off throughout Class 12.

Key topics covered

  • Basic Concepts & the Mole — Stoichiometry, empirical and molecular formulae, and concentration terms.
  • Atomic Structure & Bonding — Quantum numbers, orbitals, ionic and covalent bonding and hybridisation.
  • States of Matter — Gas laws, kinetic theory, liquefaction and intermolecular forces.
  • Thermodynamics — Enthalpy, Hess's law, entropy, Gibbs free energy and spontaneity.
  • Equilibrium — Chemical and ionic equilibrium, pH, buffers and solubility product.
  • Redox & Periodicity — Oxidation numbers, balancing redox equations and periodic trends.
  • s-Block & p-Block Elements — Group properties, trends and important compounds.
  • Organic Chemistry — IUPAC nomenclature, isomerism, mechanisms and hydrocarbons.
