Year 3 marks the shift from concrete counting toward genuine number fluency. Students consolidate place value up to 1,000, build speed and confidence with mental addition and subtraction, and meet formal written methods for the first time. Multiplication and division move beyond doubling and halving into the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, taught alongside real problem-solving so the facts stick.

Fractions are introduced properly this year — recognising, finding and comparing unit and simple non-unit fractions of shapes and quantities. Measurement work covers length, mass, capacity, money and time (including the 24-hour clock), while geometry introduces angles, right angles and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

A patient, consistent tutor makes a real difference at this stage: Year 3 is where gaps in times tables or number confidence either get caught early or start compounding into later years.
