Year 7 is the transition into secondary maths, and the pace usually picks up noticeably. The year begins by consolidating primary content — place value, negative numbers, factors, multiples and primes, order of operations — before moving into genuine algebra: writing and simplifying expressions, substituting values, and solving simple one-step equations.

Fractions, decimals and percentages are pushed toward full fluency, alongside a first proper treatment of ratio and direct proportion. Coordinates and straight-line graphs are introduced, along with angle facts (angles on a straight line, around a point, and in triangles), calculating area and perimeter, and an introduction to probability using simple experiments. Statistics work covers calculating averages (mean, median, mode and range) and representing data clearly.

How a student handles Year 7 often sets the tone for the rest of secondary maths — a wobbly start with algebra notation or negative numbers tends to resurface every year afterward if it isn't addressed early.
