Mathematics — Year 2

British Curriculum · Ages 6-7

Year 2 consolidates number to 100 — understanding tens and ones, comparing and ordering numbers, and using this to add and subtract two-digit numbers, including with regrouping. This is the year times tables begin properly: the 2, 5 and 10 times tables (and their related division facts) are expected to be secure by the end of the year.

Fractions extend to recognising and finding a half, a quarter, a third, two-quarters and three-quarters of shapes and quantities, including understanding that two quarters and one half are equivalent. Children also work with money in pounds and pence for the first time, and tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Statistics is introduced through simple tally charts, pictograms and block diagrams, alongside continued work on the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and using mathematical language to describe them precisely.

Key topics covered

  • Number & Place Value — Tens and ones to 100; comparing, ordering and reading numbers.
  • Addition & Subtraction — Two-digit addition and subtraction, including regrouping across 10s.
  • Multiplication & Division — 2, 5 and 10 times tables and their related division facts.
  • Fractions — Halves, quarters, thirds, and recognising simple equivalent fractions.
  • Money & Time — Pounds and pence; telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes.
  • Statistics & Shape — Tally charts, pictograms, and properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
