Pearson Edexcel International A Level English Language (YEN01) and English Literature (YET01) are unit-based, with AS units taken first and A2 units completing the qualification.

English Language covers language variation, contexts of use, child language acquisition and language investigation. English Literature covers poetry, prose and drama across periods, with comparative essays and unseen analysis, and rewards engagement with critical interpretations.

The unit structure allows resits, and coursework-style investigation units suit students who write better with time than under pressure. Both routes are respected for university entry, including for law and humanities degrees.

Key topics covered

  • Language Variation — Regional, social and global variation in English and attitudes to it.

  • Child Language Acquisition — How children develop spoken and written language.
  • Poetry & Prose — Set texts across periods studied for method, theme and context.
  • Drama & Comparison — Dramatic technique and sustained comparison across texts.
