Mathematics — Grade 6

American Curriculum · Ages 11-12

Grade 6 introduces ratios and unit rates as a genuinely new way of comparing quantities, and extends division to fractions divided by fractions. Negative numbers are introduced formally, along with a first proper treatment of algebraic expressions and one-variable equations.

Statistics becomes a real strand this year — understanding variability in data sets — alongside area, surface area and volume of more complex solid shapes.

Key topics covered

  • Ratios & Unit Rates — A new way of comparing and scaling quantities.
  • Dividing Fractions — Fraction-by-fraction division, building on Grade 5 fluency.
  • Negative Numbers — Formal introduction and work on the number line.
  • Expressions & Equations — Writing and solving one-variable equations.
  • Statistics — Understanding variability and distribution in data sets.
