Mathematics — Grade 3

American Curriculum · Ages 8-9

Grade 3 is where multiplication and division become central — fluency within 100, and understanding the relationship between the two operations rather than just memorizing facts. Fractions are introduced as numbers in their own right for the first time, understood as points on a number line.

Students also work with area and perimeter, connecting multiplication to real spatial reasoning, and interpret data in scaled bar graphs. This is a pivotal year: multiplication fluency gaps here tend to slow every grade that follows.

Key topics covered

  • Multiplication & Division — Fluency within 100; understanding the relationship between the operations.
  • Fractions — Understanding fractions as numbers on a number line; equivalent fractions.
  • Area & Perimeter — Connecting multiplication to spatial reasoning.
  • Measurement & Data — Time, liquid volume, mass, and scaled bar graphs.
