Science — Grade 10

American Curriculum · Ages 15-16

Tenth grade science is most commonly Chemistry, though some sequences place Biology here. Chemistry covers atomic structure and electron configuration, periodic trends, ionic and covalent bonding, nomenclature, and writing and balancing chemical equations.

The quantitative core is stoichiometry — the mole, molar mass, limiting reactants and percent yield — alongside gas laws, solutions and molarity, thermochemistry, acids and bases, and reaction rates. Laboratory work introduces titration, and calculation accuracy becomes the main driver of grades.

Key topics covered

  • Atomic Structure — Subatomic particles, isotopes, electron configuration and periodic trends.
  • Bonding & Nomenclature — Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, and naming compounds correctly.
  • Chemical Equations — Writing, balancing and classifying reactions, including net ionic equations.
  • Stoichiometry — The mole, molar mass, limiting reactants, percent yield and mass relationships.
  • Gases & Solutions — Gas laws, molarity, dilution, solubility and colligative properties.
  • Thermochemistry — Enthalpy, calorimetry, and endothermic and exothermic processes.
  • Acids, Bases & Kinetics — pH, neutralization, titration, equilibrium and factors affecting rate.
