Computer Science

Grade 5 · US Curriculum Standards

Fifth grade computer science moves toward real software thinking. Students use nested loops, multiple variables, lists and reusable functions, and many write their first lines of text-based code, often in Python.

They model situations in spreadsheets using formulas, and learn how binary represents information, what the parts of a computer do, and how the internet routes data. Cyber security basics — strong passwords, phishing and software updates — are introduced properly.
