Year 7 English introduces secondary-level literary study. Pupils read a full novel, a Shakespeare extract or play, and a range of poetry and non-fiction, and learn to analyse how writers use language and structure to create effect.

Writing moves toward the two strands that carry through to GCSE: creative writing with a controlled narrative voice, and transactional writing — articles, letters, reports and speeches — shaped for a specific audience and purpose.

Oracy is a distinct strand of the Welsh curriculum, so structured discussion, presentation and listening are taught and assessed rather than assumed.
