Science
Year 7 · Curriculum for Wales
Year 7 science is taught as biology, chemistry and physics strands within the Science and Technology Area of Learning and Experience. Biology covers cells, organ systems, reproduction and classification; chemistry covers particles, states of matter, elements, compounds, mixtures and separation techniques.
Physics introduces forces, speed, energy stores and transfers, and simple electrical circuits. Laboratory work becomes formal: safe use of equipment, Bunsen burners, measurement and risk awareness.
The bigger change is in enquiry: pupils identify variables, plan a method someone else could follow, tabulate results and evaluate what went wrong. Those write-up skills carry all the way to GCSE.
Important Topics
- Cells & OrganisationAnimal and plant cells, specialised cells, tissues, organs and organ systems.
- Reproduction & ClassificationHuman and plant reproduction, variation and grouping living things.
- Particles & MatterThe particle model, states of matter, and changes of state.
- Elements, Compounds & MixturesThe periodic table, chemical symbols and separation techniques.
- Forces & EnergyContact and non-contact forces, speed, energy stores and transfers.
- ElectricitySeries and parallel circuits, current, voltage and circuit symbols.
- Working ScientificallyVariables, method writing, results tables, graphs and evaluation.
