WJEC A-Level English Literature in Wales follows the modular AS and A2 pattern, with AS units taken in Year 12 counting towards the final grade. Learners study poetry, drama including Shakespeare, prose, and complete a coursework folder, with unseen material appearing in the examined units.

Because AS units contribute to the A-Level, the set texts studied in Year 12 are examined while they are fresh rather than a year later — an advantage for retention, but one that front-loads the workload. Coursework is where learners have the most freedom and, correspondingly, where the choice of texts most affects the ceiling on the grade: a genuinely comparable pair produces a stronger essay than two texts joined by a thin theme.
