Science

Year 1 science teaches children to work scientifically. They identify and name common plants and animals, describe their basic parts, group living things, and identify everyday materials and their properties.

Seasonal change is studied across the year, and simple investigations introduce fair testing — changing one thing, keeping the rest the same, and recording what happened in a table or drawing.

The Science and Technology curriculum in Wales links this closely to design work, so children often plan and build something and then test whether it does the job.
