English

Year 1 · Curriculum for Wales

Year 1 English extends phonics into longer words and alternative spellings for the same sound, while fluency and expression become the focus of reading aloud. Comprehension work moves into answering questions about a text and predicting what might happen next.

Writing develops from single sentences into short sequences of sentences with capital letters, full stops and finger spaces used consistently. Children write for real purposes — a recount of something they did, a set of instructions, a short story.

Oracy is assessed in its own right under Curriculum for Wales, so explaining ideas clearly, listening to others and responding are practised regularly across the week.
