Year 10 is the first year of the GCSE Biology course in England, whether a student is taking separate sciences or Combined Science. Most schools cover cell biology, organisation, infection and response, and bioenergetics across this year.

The step up from Key Stage 3 is real: students must now explain mechanisms rather than describe them, handle unfamiliar data, and complete the required practicals that the written papers question them on.
