View topicsYear 10 is the first year of the GCSE Biology course in England, whether a student is taking separate sciences or Combined Science. Most schools cover cell biology, organisation, infection and response, and bioenergetics across this year.
The step up from Key Stage 3 is real: students must now explain mechanisms rather than describe them, handle unfamiliar data, and complete the required practicals that the written papers question them on. Exam board content is broadly the same across AQA, OCR, Pearson and WJEC: see the board pages for the specification detail.
