Mathematics

11+ (Eleven Plus)

11+ Maths tests draw on the full Key Stage 2 curriculum (Years 3–6) but under exam conditions: multi-step word problems, mental arithmetic under time pressure, and reasoning questions designed to separate strong mathematical thinking from simple recall. Most papers (GL Assessment or CEM/Durham-style, depending on the region and school) cover the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, and basic geometry, but phrased as puzzles rather than straightforward calculations.

The real skill being tested is speed combined with accuracy under pressure, and the ability to spot which operation a worded question actually requires. Students who are comfortable with KS2 content but haven't practised exam-style timing and question phrasing often underperform relative to their actual ability, which is exactly the gap focused 11+ preparation is meant to close.

Curriculum Breakdown

Important Topics

  • Arithmetic FluencyFast, accurate mental and written calculation across all four operations.
  • Fractions, Decimals & PercentagesConversions and applied problems, often combined within a single question.
  • Ratio & ProportionSharing, scaling and comparing quantities in worded contexts.
  • Multi-Step Word ProblemsExtracting the correct operations from realistic, wordy scenarios.
  • Measurement & GeometryArea, perimeter, angles and shape properties, applied under time pressure.
  • Exam TechniqueWorking at pace across timed papers without losing accuracy.
