Mathematics
Year 7 · National Curriculum (England)
Year 7 is the transition into secondary maths, and the pace usually picks up noticeably. The year begins by consolidating primary content (place value, negative numbers, factors, multiples and primes, order of operations) before moving into genuine algebra: writing and simplifying expressions, substituting values, and solving simple one-step equations.
Fractions, decimals and percentages are pushed toward full fluency, alongside a first proper treatment of ratio and direct proportion. Coordinates and straight-line graphs are introduced, along with angle facts (angles on a straight line, around a point, and in triangles), calculating area and perimeter, and an introduction to probability using simple experiments. Statistics work covers calculating averages (mean, median, mode and range) and representing data clearly.
How a student handles Year 7 often sets the tone for the rest of secondary maths: a wobbly start with algebra notation or negative numbers tends to resurface every year afterward if it isn't addressed early.
