Science — MYP 2

International Baccalaureate · Ages 12-13

MYP 2 Sciences moves into more quantitative work across the three disciplines. Biology covers body systems and interdependence, chemistry covers atoms, elements and compounds and chemical change, and physics covers motion, forces and energy transfer with calculation.

Students design and carry out their own investigations with controlled variables, present results graphically, and evaluate the reliability of their method.

The reflecting on impacts criterion asks students to consider how science interacts with society and the environment — a strand with no direct equivalent in most national curricula.

Key topics covered

  • Body Systems — Digestion, circulation, respiration and how systems interact.
  • Atoms & Chemical Change — Elements, compounds, mixtures, and physical and chemical change.
  • Motion & Forces — Speed, acceleration, forces and their effects, with calculation.
  • Energy — Energy stores, transfer, efficiency and conservation.
  • Scientific Investigation — Research question, variables, method, data and evaluation.
  • Science & Society — The impact of scientific developments on people and the environment.
