Year 3 pushes reading fluency and comprehension further, with a growing focus on inference — working out what a text implies, not just what it states directly. Writing introduces paragraphs for the first time, along with conjunctions like "because" and "although" to build more complex sentences.

Apostrophes for possession (the dog's bone) and contraction (don't) are taught explicitly, and students begin using a dictionary independently to check spellings and meanings.
